“This is the only thing the youth of Hai to Gensou no Grimgar remember before awakening in an unknown building in a medieval landscape enshrouded in darkness. They don’t remember anything besides their own names. The group of strangers is told that in order to make a living, they would have to join the Reserve Army forces to keep the town safe from nearby monsters. The stronger looking people form a team to join the Reserve Army and depart, leaving Manato, Haruhiro, Ranta, Yume, Mogzo, and Shihoru to fend for themselves. But how will they get by if they can’t even defeat the weakest of monsters?”

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar is a wonderful masterpiece, the artwork, the characters, the story all wraps together in a very beautiful anime. The artwork is so beautiful! All the backgrounds are a these really sketchy lines filled in with a water color style. Each scenery shot is a work of art, especially when it takes place in the forest. Hai to Gensou no Grimgar has a RPG Game feel to it, much like SAO, although it’s a much more darker and dangerous side of the gaming world. In the story of Grimgar the enemies are ALIVE, they think, feel, and struggle much like our main characters. These aren’t simply mindless AI controlled fonder, these are living breathing creatures that want to live as much as any human. THIS is what really sets Hai to Gensou no Grimgar apart from the rest of the anime in the game genre. When people die in Grimgar they really DIE, not the shatter into sparkly crystals cause your health bar got too low, It’s bleeding out because you have an arrow in your back or a gashing wound on your leg. The body then must be cremated or the Curse will turn them into undead soldiers. The story is filled with high tension and the many tears, the realism that it brings to story is so well done, and I hope the light novel does well so that there can be a second season, because at the end Haruhiro seems to be gaining a skill that could further improve his abilities to fight so hopefully Season 2 happens!
