Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation is actually one of the better game-turned-anime that I’ve seen. The take on the story is a lot different than you would expect, rather than setting the plot into the game world itself, it’s set in a regular everyday setting and the game is ACTUALLY a game that the characters play, and some aspects of the game are then brought into the “normal” world. It makes for a story that is a lot more interesting and easier to follow especially for those that have no idea what the game is. The character designs are great, all the characters look good and the merging of 2D and 3D animation works pretty well here. As for character development…..eh… Itsuki (our Protag-kun) doesn’t really change much from the beginning, he whines a lot through the plot, and never really thinks about his action and always has to be told by someone else that what he’s doing is utterly stupid. Our heroines, Aika and Rina-senpai however are really interesting, Rina being all perfect is actually discovered to have a nerdy side and is actually really shy! Aika is an oddball but there’s more to her than you would think, also she looks good in maid dresses XD. Overall, if you’ve played PSO2 then I suggest giving it a try, it’s always cool to see games you know and love get animated! If not I’d say it wouldn’t hurt to pass on this one since it’s not that exciting.
