“College student Chitose Karasuma is determined not to do boring things as she enters the adult world. To this end, this bad-mannered beauty barges into a facility that trains would-be voice actors and actresses, somehow landing a job at “Number One Produce,” a seiyuu agency managed by her older brother, Gojou. In Chitose’s mind, she’s poised for greatness, but finds herself at a loss when she continues to only get minor roles. As she clashes with other girls in the agency, including a cunning airhead and a girl with a Kansai accent, Chitose is about to learn that there’s more to succeeding in this competitive industry than she imagined.” -ANN
At first Gi(a)lrish Number was one of my favorite coming into the season, but as it went on it was sort of painful to watch. Especially whenever Kuzu-san would show up, he’d just make every situation worse.
“It’s in the bag! GAHAHAHAHA”
Gi(a)lrish Number is another “Behind the Scenes” type anime where we get to see how seiyuus (voice actors) work, something similar to “Sore ga Seiyuu!”.The Story follows Chitose Karasuma, a somewhat talented, self-centered, and lazy seiyuu. After getting many minor roles, she finally gets a chance at being the main heroine of a series called “KuuSure”. The story afterwards is the hardships that Chitose and friends face during the production. Most of which Kuzu-san ruins. Kuzu represents those who value the profit more than the quality of the anime. As the story goes on, it’s episode after frustrating episode of Kuzu making things more complicated for the production and animation team.
Artwork & Animation:
If there anything that makes Gi(a)lrish Number great, it’s the artwork. The Moe-style is really cute, and I like the style of the eyes. I love all the character designs as well, especially Chitose and Kazuha! The backgrounds and such were so-so nothing to rave about.
Ah..Chitose… Need I say more? As the main characters goes most are usually, humble and nice, but Chitose on the other hand… let’s just say she’s a but different. But as the main character she gets the most development. As we progress through the story she realizes that she isn’t the best, that others can easily replace her, and that she’s been the one holding everyone down. She finally admits to it, eventually, and her voice acting gets SOOOO much better!! Sort of makes me like her a little more you know? Sure a lot of people are going to hate her but there’s something inside that makes me root for her especially after she becomes a little more humble. Also you can’t hate on her smug faces, I mean c’mon! They’re GOLD. The rest of the cast doesn’t get that much development, besides Gojou, Kazuha, and Momoka two get some backstory just for the heck of it.
Sound (OST & Voice Acting):
Uh well this one is interesting to write a review for haha, I wanna commend Chitose’s Seiyuu for being a champ and recording Chitose’s awful first few lines of KuuSure. As for OST the OP and ED are both very catchy as well as the insert songs they were sang by the seiyuus themselves. I wished there was more Idol-type songs and performances since the entire time Kuzu and the president were thinking about making the gang into a Idol-seiyuu group. There’s like two full performances in the show, the first episode and the LAST episode, gotta get your audiences’ attention somehow I guess.
As much as I enjoyed the “behind the scenes” aspect of the show, the way Kuzu handled everything ruined this show for me. Rather than enjoy I felt stressed and frustrated because he would never consider the authors opinion’s and is always making last minute decisions. But when Kuzu was out of the picture and it was the girls, it was a little more bearable. Especially the swimsuit photoshoot ( ＝ω＝ ).
Overall: score 8
Gi(a)lrish Number could’ve been a 9 or even 10 if it was more feel-good and had less self centered characters (Especially Kuzu). The last episode where Chitose apologizes and improves as a voice actor made start to like this anime again, but alas it is now over. But there could be a season 2 so that it could redeem itself? It could go either way, but until next time!
